FOOD ALLERGY BASICS FOR BEGINNERS

Updated: Apr 27, 2023

Food allergies can be a scary and overwhelming experience, especially for new parents who are not familiar with how to manage them. It is important to be aware of the potential dangers and take steps to keep your child safe. Here are some tips on how to stay safe with food allergies:

1. Know the signs of an allergic reaction: Familiarize yourself with the symptoms of an allergic reaction, which can range from mild to severe. Common symptoms include hives, swelling, itching, difficulty breathing, and anaphylaxis. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

2. Read food labels: Always read the labels of packaged foods to check for any allergens. The top nine allergens are milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, sesame and soy. If your child has a different food allergy, make sure to read labels carefully to avoid any potential triggers.

3. Plan ahead: When going out to eat or traveling, plan ahead and research the restaurant or destination to ensure that they can accommodate your child's food allergies. Always carry allergy medication with you, such as an EpiPen, and make sure that you and anyone who cares for your child knows how to use it.

4. Educate others: Educate your child's teachers, caregivers, and friends about their food allergies and how to recognize and respond to an allergic reaction. Encourage them to take food allergies seriously and to communicate with you about any concerns.

5. Keep an emergency plan: Develop an emergency plan with your child's doctor and share it with anyone who cares for your child. This plan should include the steps to take in case of an allergic reaction, including when to administer medication and when to call for emergency services.

By following these tips, you can help keep your child safe and reduce the risk of an allergic reaction. Remember to always be vigilant and proactive about managing your child's food allergies.
